It seems there is an accident on the M4 every day holding up traffic.

There is almost always a bloody great queue where the M4 goes down to two lanes. And as somebody else said, there are frequent accidents which bring it to a virtual standstill. Then there's bridge tolls, petrol and the like.

I agree with these two, continual accidents, often either holding you up or you hear on news. The M4 near Newport seems the worst for accidents and I have found delays in the evening a nightmare heading west. Good luck with whatever you do.

The M4 widening is between J32-29, so if you leave Cardiff via the A48 (joining the M4 at J29) then the roadworks won't affect you greatly.

    Hi,
I commute from cardiff central to bristol parkway station, and with first minute fares, I get 2 singles for £3 each, which has halved my commuting costs. Depending which bit of Grangetown you're in, you might be nearer Cardiff central anyway - I am!

    hope that helps,

    Weezl

There's no need to be rude - I was only trying to help. Although the A48 can also get congested it is much easier than the congestion around the M4 widening section, that's all I meant. Bottom line is, you have to weigh up a number of factors when thinking about travel to work and I was just adding my 2 pence worth :)

I commuted from Caerphilly (9 miles north of Cardiff) to Bristol for about five years (1997-2003 ish). It wasn't much fun, but not a huge problem for me. Also, I car shared with two other guys from my office for a year or so and that was great fun as well as MUCH cheaper.

The journey took around an hour and fifteen minutes (make sure you drive down the M49, through Sea Mills and over the Downs if you are heading to the Redland/Whieladies area).

My overriding memory of those years is of the dread of huge traffic jams at the Brynglas tunnels and lunatic drivers on mobile phones haring up behind me (I thought 85mph was a reasonable speed for the outside lane, but apparently not!)

I looked into commuting by train to Redland, but this involved at least two changes, more travelling time, and not a great saving in money, so I ditched the idea.

If I was to commute again across the bridge from Wales, I'd seriously look into getting a motorbike. Motorbikes pay no bridge toll, cost less to run, and are a bit quicker (although arguably more dangerous:eek: ) in traffic. It would be a much more feasible way to travel though.

I now live in Bristol (20 mins away from work) but might be moving back to Wales soon, so might have to look into this!

    Hope this helps some.
  • Hi there,

I am from caerphiily :j and I maybe close to getting a job in Bristol.
I live in just 2 mins from m4, Does anyone have an idea what this commute is like? toll cost? and fuel cost a month now with it being @ £137.9

    :eek::eek:

Would really love this job as it a step up but all the above....

    thanks

    Hi there
My other half has had a temporary Job in Cribbs Causeway for the last 2 months. We live in Morganstown near the M4 in Cardiff. I'm the only one who drives so each journey was taken twice, in effect, as I used to take him then have to come back home, then go again to pick him up.
We have been very lucky in that his boss lives in Newport, so most of the time it was just getting to Newport for the journey over the bridge, but sometimes we've had to travel all the way, which is pretty expensive for us because of the extra travelling.
for the right wage its certainly worth your while. you wont know just how much it will cost petrol wise without actually doing it as each car is different, but I would certainly think that investing in a TAG for the bridge tolls is a good idea. They're £100 a month (probably going up in January) and are so much quicker than stopping to pay, and assuming you'll do 5 journeys home a week at £6 a time, you'll save a bit of money.
you might also get lucky like we did and find someone who lives this side of the bridge but works in the same place as you!
good luck with the new job.....If you got it!!!
    And shop around for petrol!
all the best, and Merry Christmas
