Eon vs Eon Next and British Gas vs Evolve

Can anyone tell me the difference between Eon and Eon Next?

And between British Gas and Evolve?

And whether you can swap from one to the other?
When I looked at British Gas, the website seemed to say anyone paying via direct debit would need an account with Evolve... operated by British Gas.

Not sure about Eon.

E.ON Next is a brand of E.ON, using different software for the back-end. E.ON are moving everyone to E.ON Next, including former nPower customers.

I think BG and BG Evolve are similar.

If you were with E.ON then you could switch to E.ON Next but not the other way round as E.ON haven't been taking on new customers for a few months now.

I am with BG Evolve and my in laws are with British Gas.
I was checking fixed rates for them and when I entered their address on the BG Evolve web site - it returned the text at the bottom of this post.
Not sure if this is due to uncertainty in the energy market, or if they consider themselves to be the same company, but doesnt look like you can manually switch to BG Evolve from BG for some reason

I know that British Gas have been switching some of their customers to Evolve which has not gone down very well with them. I was with Evolve until recently having switched to them almost a year ago from Tonik (via a dreadful month with Scottish Power as SoLR). Evolve are awful. The only way that you can contact them is via web chat, running only during working hours (9 - 5 weekdays) or email (min 5 day response time). The web chat way of contacting them is such a slow process and they could deal with far more customers if they had a phone system. Have switched to EDF and they are a breath of fresh air and signed up for a three year fix just before things spiralled. Their webchat is fast and the staff seem knowledgeable.
