Moving house in a gas crisis...?

Hi! We are due to complete on a new house this month which is due for a full renovation over the winter (we won't be living there). I will be trying to keep the heating off as much as possible without letting the house get too cold, though I haven't quite figured out the best way of doing that yet.

My main question is about supplier - we are currently living with parents after selling our own home in the summer, so do not have a current supplier. The new home is currently serviced by British Gas and I believe we will be put on to a deemed contract? Is this the same as a variable rate, and therefore subject to the price cap? The only other offer they have is a 2-year fix which I do not want to do, so I would really appreciate advice on how to approach it given the price of gas and lack of options to switch. Thanks!

Yes, you will be put onto their SVR contract which is capped and has no exit fees.
When you sign up with them to create your account make it very clear that you wish to remain on that tariff and do not wish to be moved to a different one at this time.
