wittynamegoeshere said:If it's intermittent then definitely get it looked at. This sort of thing can often mean a loose terminal, which will mean there's a small but very worrying risk of overheating/fire.There shouldn't normally be any connection whatsoever between a light fitting and the sockets. If it's really ancient then get ready for some bad news.

Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -
I was required(!) to fit a light fitting for them, and the rubber looked like the sidewalls on old car tyres - still intact but wrinkly. Also the red and black were both very similar shades of brown.Given that they don't want their house smashing up, a good option would be to retrofit circuit breakers, but it's very unlikely any sparky would agree to wire to their cabling and they'd probably get nuisance trips due to leakage. Unfortunately it's a choice of danger or mess, and this pair seem to prefer danger. They've been told, I've shown them youtube videos of what the cable looks like, if the place burns down then my conscience is clear. They really need to move house, but suggesting that just triggers a never-ending argument between the two of them! One wants to move, the other doesn't.0
