Import VAT from EU after brexit

Bought a crash helmet from Germany £260, delivered by fedex. I have received a invoice from fedex import duties of £12 plus VAT £52. I am positive motorcycle crash helmets are zero rated for VAT that's why I thought it would be OK from EU. It has been wrongly assigned during import although clearly stating its a helmet on the import invoice.
Do I pay fedex and somehow try and claim back VAT somehow?? Anyone know how?
Or do I just pay them the import duties and tell them they have been wrongly charged for VAT?
Any ideas?
Definitely going to source from UK businesses from now on its to much hassle buying from EU.
