Cancelling BT line after 12 days?

Hello all,

New to this board so apologies if this has been covered before!

I have just bought a house and it had a BT line in it. I called them to get switched over to it as the vendors did not take it with them. They said I had to get a new line put in which basically consisted of them going to the exchange to switch it on. I called BT on Fri 30th Nov. It went live on Tues 4th Dec. I only set up the line rental, and not any packages as I was going to get those from Sky.

Looked on Sky's website earlier to get set up for their Speak/Surf/See package only to find that they do not offer Sky BroadBand Base in my area! But they do offer Super-fast Connect, which means an extra £17 on top of the £19/mth for S/S/S package (plus £11/mth for BT line rental). On seeing this, I'm thinking about just having Sky TV, and getting a broadband/talk package from another provider.

Now, if I go with (e.g. Ticali or TalkTalk) do they switch my line rental from BT to them, or do I have to cancel the line rental with BT, then join with the other provider? If the latter is the case, what cancellation charges are there to pay to BT.

Thanks very much for any help, trying to save money as house ownership is a mindfield of bills as it is!

Welcome to the MSE forums srdenny.

Keep the BT line (make sure you're on BT Together Option 1, pay by DD and opt for the paper-free 50p/month discount) but see the 'HERE' link in my signature below on how to keep voice telephony costs to a minimum.

Then consider your broadband options separately.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

You have a year or more contract with BT and if you switch rental contract you will have to pay BT for ending the contract early.
From 1st May 2007, for customers ending their service early, we replaced the existing charges with a policy that requires customers who have ordered a line on or after 1st May to pay the outstanding line rental for the 12-month minimum term of their contract, up to a maximum of £70 (incl. VAT). Customers moving home and transferring BT service to their new address will be subject to a new minimum term from the date of start of service at the new address.

When you cancel the contract you only pay the outstanding line rental for the 12-month minimum term of their contract, up to a maximum of £70 (incl. VAT). So if say 3 months were left you would only pay 3 x £10.50p= £34.50p.

  • Thanks for the swift replies guys!

I am not sure what BT package I am on, will have to look... I have asked for just the line rental (ie no free airtime I think) as I was planning on going with Sky for the airtime, is this Together Op 1?

The only reason I had thought of going with another line rental provider was because the BB deals with others (e.g. TalkTalk or Tiscali) are much less expensive than BT. I think TT is £10.50/m line rental plus £5.95 for BB. BT is £8.95 for the first 6 months then climbs wildly to £17ish/m.

To be fair Heinz, I have yet to look at your HERE info. That said if I did want to get airtime bundled with cheap BB with another provider, would I be able to swap the line rental to that provider, or if not (and therefore I would have to cancel BT then start with someone else) what would the cancellation charges be?

    TIA

My advice, but Heinz is the expert not me.

Stay with BT at least for a year.

Get a seperate ISP for internet.

Try Heinz here link for free evening and weekend calls, and I mean free no monthy payment.

Don't know if it helps but if you have an O2 contract check if you can get their broadband in your area as they give it you for £7.50 a month for (8 meg) no limits. We've got it and no complaints at all!
  • Try Be*. My other half gets 6.5 mbps down stream and 1100 up with a ping below 50 ms. She is approx a mile from the exchange.
    £12/m
    I don't use Be*, I'm a BT Retail customer.

Don't think anyones mentioned this- if there's existing line BT why are they telling you that a new one is need. This is a charge of £150 and seems to me that you dont need it.

If you do have a new line it leads to the 12 months contract which will cost to £70 to cancel.

If you are not in a contract I'd go with TalkTalk or Tiscali if you're interested in the TV channels...

o2 bb deal is a good one

    or

if you can get discounted Orange ADSL if your on a Orange contract, bypass Orange if your exchange is LLU'd though

if your not with Orange mobile consider the fantstic 10% off & 180 credit deals they have online at the moment, but only if your ADSL
SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe ;)
