Batteries for digital camera

Hi,
Whats the best type of batteries to get for our digital camera ?. We have the rechargeable ones that were supplied with it, but they hardly seem to last five minutes and then need re-recharging again. Is it because they are cheap or is there a way of telling if they are fauly or are we better using normal batteries ?

Thanks

NiMH rechargeable battery(ies) - not NiCads - ideally with a capacity of 2300mAh or above (you should be able to find 2500 ot 2700mAh - have a look at chargers/batteries from Amazon or www.mymemory.com).

As a simple test you could put them in another device to see how long they last, walkman/cd player, torch etc.

They probably have a low milliamperere hour rating, the lower this is the shorter they last [and the cheaper they are]

You will see the rating somewhere on them, written as xxxmAh, where xxx is the figure

Mine for instance are 2100mAh, and another set are 1300mAh
So in theory the 2100mAh should last nearly twice as long as the 1300mAh ones

Do you leave the LCD display on? That gobbles up the charge

NiMH batteries are the best. Cheaper batteries often have poorer chemistry and/or have been hanging around after manufacture. NiMH and NiCd batteries can require a few charge/discharge cycles before they reach full capacity. A 'smart' charger which incorporates 'negative delta V' circuitry (i.e. it looks for the small drop in voltage when charging completes) and individual charge channels (so each battery is charged only as long as it requires, no more, no less) for each battery will give the best results.
  • There is a new litium battery advertised on TV by one of the big battery companies not Duracell. they claim to last long time. just bought some for my digi camera cos mine run out quicker than Ben Johnson on steroids.
