I see there is lots of Information about student loans being wiped according to different years. . I took my first years loan in 1997, graduated in 2001. I’m 50 in December and understand the student loans will be wiped then. Do they contact me by letter or do I apply to have them wiped please?

I wrote to them in advance and asked them to confirm that my loans would be wiped on my 50th birthday. They did, and just after the happy day they wrote again to confirm that they had been cancelled. Best birthday present I'd had in years!

Can anyone confirm that the rules are 25 years or 50 whichever is soonest as my daughter and partner reach 25 years next year. This year erudio didn't send a deferment letter, but he has just got a,we have not received your deferment etc. letter
Both their final loans were taken out in 1997.

I'd love confirmation of this too, Googling it suggests that the rules have changed since! On the gov website it says that a Type 1 loan will only be wiped when you're 65. These rules can't be changed since you've taken the loan out, surely??

Daughter however her deferment is slightly earlier than him so she also has set a reminder in case she doesn't get a deferral notice , so she can defer for her final year.
We and they think Erudio is doing this to force a default as they know the loans will be wiped. Make sure you set reminders when you usually receive your deferral letter just in case they try the same with you.
The gov website is as clear as mud tbh. But if your loan is the same as theirs taken out in 1997 the 30 yer or 50 years of age applies. It's the later loanees that have changed.
Good luck x0
