Council tax evaluation

I moved into my property in Nov 2018, it had had extensive work done to to extend it and make it into a 3 bed from a 2 bed so I was expecting a valuation change letter at some point. I also belive I am now in the correct band so can't challenge it. My issue is with the payments. The wording on the letter from the valuation office says "The effective date, shown in the Notice, is the date that the change took place. If the list alteration affects the amount of council tax you pay, then the revised payments will be calculated from the effective date. I took this to mean that from the 1st September my tax would increase and I would be paying the new amount for the remaining months. However it looks like the council have put me on the new band as of the 1/4/2021 and i'm now effectively paying arrears. Is this correct? I dont want to call them to query it if they are in the right and i'm just confused.

The wording on the bill may be causing confusion. It may just show the total amount now payable from 1 April 2021 to 31 March 2021. An easy way to calculate this is to count the number of days from 1 April to 31 August, divide by 365 and then multiply by your old band amount for the year. Then count the number pf days from 1 September to 31 March, divide by 365 and then multiply by your new band amount for the year. If the 2 totals don't equal the amount you are now being asked to pay for the year then contact the council.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
