Permanently block a recurring and unwanted incoming ‘standing order’ payment ???

Options

Is it possible to permanently block a recurring and unwanted ‘standing order’ payment that’s being credited to my Bank account?

I can’t contact the sender by any conventional method and I want the unwarranted payments to cease.

All replies gratefully received.

A standing order is controlled by the person that set it up. As receiver there is nothing you can do to stop the credit, if you can not get in touch with them.

All you can do is put them in a savings acc in the hope that at some point you are able to contact them and get them to stop. But at the end of the day it is their loss, until they cancel it with their bank.

You could open a new account and manually transfer all your DD over and tell your employer etc your new details and close the original account.

Or if it's money from a person that you have previously asked not to contact you, then you could go to the police and report it as harassment.

You haven't said how much it is, what it's for, who it's from etc. So there may be more avenues available.

You should report it to your bank as if the person sending the money in involved in fraud, then by keeping quiet you could get a CIFAS marker.

Thanks for the replies... @phillw : sorry for the scant detail in my thread starter...I was a little rushed.

There is definitely no fraudulent activity. I know the name of the person (he’s an ex associate from many many years ago) and I know his bank account number/sort code from which the standing order emanates. The sort code is 404780 (HSBC, First Direct, Leeds).

His regular monthly standing order payment goes back many years but circumstances changed a few months ago and the standing order is no longer appropriate. It’s not a large amount but will obviously build up in my account over time if I can’t stop it.

Our communication was on a very infrequent ad-hoc basis and was only ever done by email,... but he is not responding  to my emails asking him to cancel his standing-order. It’s been about 5 years since I last had positive email contact with him,...I’ve had no need to contact him personally since then,...until now that is.

I know his name, bank account details, and an email address. Nothing else.

I’m still receiving his standing order payments and I have no easy way of stopping his payments or contacting him;...if indeed he’s still contactable!

Closing my own bank account is not an option that I wish to explore.

Any further help will be greatly appreciated.

Any other way to track him down - business details or anything like that?
The only other option I can think of, given that you have his bank details, is to set up a payment to send it back to him at whatever interval you deem appropriate. If you name the payment as “returned xyz” he might see it in his bank statement. If he checks them, which is a moot point.
Are the emails coming back as undeliverable or going through?

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Have you returned the money you've received?

You could contact the paying bank with the information you have. They may oblige by contacting the payee. For all you know, it may be in the hands of executors.

Yes, the money has been returned thus far.

Emails are not being returned as ‘undeliverable’. They apparently reach their destination

I don’t really want to set-up a regular payment back to his account in case his payments to me suddenly stop and I don’t notice they’ve stopped.

If his payments continue  unabated I guess I could make a regular payment to my own reserve bank account and every so often transfer that amount back to the account from whence the standing orders came, if appropriate. It’s still a task that I’d rather do without, tbh.

I know little of his personal or professional background unfortunately so locating him would be problematic. He may be deceased,...I have no way of knowing.

The sort code gives me this 404780  (HSBC, First Direct, Leeds).

Can anyone suggest an appropriate dept  to contact at First Direct ? ...would they be sympathetic to my approach?

First Direct are renowned for their telephone customer service so if any bank could/would help you it is them.

That was in response  to an earlier question by @elsien

It doesn’t mean much in itself other than, in this particular case, his email status hasn’t suddenly changed. I’ve sent him countless emails over the years;...but obviously I’ve no idea if any of the recent emails have actually been read. His lack of action over my recent emails would suggest they haven’t been read.
