Dad has passed

Hi my dad passed away back in July I'm using a solicitor to deal with probate it's a reasonably simple estate a property and some money all in 1 bank account around 54k there are some small bequests to grandchildren and the remaining split between myself and my sister . I'm the executor.  Probate was applied for 2 weeks ago  does anyone have any idea of timeframe to get this granted? I'm finding the stress of dealing and waiting overwhelming and my sister is overseas and is frankly being an idiot with regards to the whole thing . Is there light at the end if the tunnel ? Has anyone had a grant processed reasonably quickly ?

Yes, ours was done (in June) within a week of applying online, with another couple fo days for the grants of probate to arrive by post....  but it's a 'how long is a piece of string' type question ,as every case seems to be different.
  • I am sorry for your loss.  I lost my Mum last year.

I used a solicitor for probate.  The form goes to HMRC first and this took four weeks and then three weeks for Probate.  Selling the flat is now at 3.5 months and exchange and completion should be next week.

The waiting is very difficult but you have done everything you can.  If you are selling the property, have you cleared it?
  • Hi I will be selling its going through auction haven't cleared it as yet.  60 years he luved there it's going to be a huge task

It will be a massive task and it took me months to clear Mum's flat but the property cannot be sold until Probate is granted and if you get started, it will take your mind off the waiting.  If it's going to auction you may not need to remove large items of furniture.  Do one room at a time.  I found being methodical (I'm not normally!) helped.

If you aren't concerned about identifying / retaining items of sentimental or monetary value, you could either just arrange for a house clearance company to come in and clear the lot, or sell in auction with the condition that it is sold complete with all contents.
  • Can I say if it is a simple estate why go through a solicitor?  It is really simple to do it yourself and save both money and time.

Partly because I am useless at form filling (nearly messed up the Fixtures and Fittings form) and also I had an awful lot of other stuff to do, on my own.  I/the estate were happy to pay for piece of mind and let me get on with the clearing/selling/freecycling etc etc.

I did have a house clearance co. in.  OMG!  Expensive.  OP, leave the big stuff and remove the small/personal items.
  • Just a quick update for those going through probate grant was applied for 13th of September and I've just seen online that the grant was issued yesterday

Sorry for your loss kirstyha - I lost my dad in the middle of February of this year.
I only got around to completing the IHT forms myself at the end of June, and then applied for probate at the end of July. I contacted them via their online chat last week, and the advisor matched the IHT form to the probate application during the chat - unsure why they couldn't have matched it without my prompting them. I now have to wait another 8 or so weeks!
