Lesson learnt. Will be going for a car with less than 100k miles and taking a mechanic to inspect
The mileage isn't really that relevant, it's not like going from a 145K mile car to a 95K mile car is going to release you from any potential problems.
A healthy service history is what I'd look for.
There's nothing like a plethora of receipts for every little thing to make me trust the previous owner.
I do it, I expect it of others too.
  • 145k for a 14 year old car is actually at or just below average miles.  Plus, I would be more interested in servicing history than miles.
  • I think the lucky escape is not paying £5k for a car nearing the end of its life.

All this drama could have been avoided by a simple test drive before purchase, of course. Why are people so keen to have a mechanic inspect a used car only after they have purchased it?

A car is either good and sound or it isn't, regardless of miles. I've owned my car from new, 2015 now with over 150K under it belt and is still as nice to drive as when it had 50K. I change the oil/ filters 3 times a year and only recently discs and pads F&R and a pair of rear dampers due to one having a slight misting of oil, tyres as and when.
Edit; a cam belt and kit as a maintenance job.

In 150K miles it's had one breakdown, fuel pump module failed, back on the road next day and trouble free since. VW Golf TD.
