Can someone recommend an electric fire?

In one of the living there is a wall mounted gas fire which I had installed roughly 20 years ago. For a long time I have trouble getting it going. It's the starter. I had it changed once and then it started working perfectly. Few years later it started to play up.

Thinking of changing the gas fire instead of having it fixed again. I know that before I can have a new gas fire fitted I need to have a smoke test done to make sure there is no obstruction in the chimney. I believe I also need to have a hearth fitted. This was not the requirement when the gas fire was originally fitted.

I think it will be cheaper to have an electric fire installed. No need for a smoke test or having a hearth fitted. What do you think? Any recommendations?

The house does have Central heating but if we only occupy that room with the gas fire there is no need to have the central heating on.

Might be cheaper to install but it will not be cheaper to run!

As above, electric is 3-4 times more expensive to run.

The modern electric fires are fan operated so there is always that (to me) irritating noise.
I'd suggest going to a supplier where you can listen to one or more to see if that suits. My friend who has the tv on all the time doesn't notice it but I read or listen to the radio and I find it intrusive.
I've got a radiant (two bar) fire which doesn't look so good but more effective.
If i could have a gas fire here I would in a heartbeat. They throw out good heat on very low, economical to run and are there if the electric goes off in a winter storm.
The smoke chimney thing is quick and cheap. The vent required now may be an irritation but millions live with them. The hearth will be nice. Can simplify be tiles (are the original still under a carpet)?
You should have one with an electric fire too.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!
