Investing in decent shoes...that last 6 weeks!

What would you do Moneysavers?

I usually buy leather ballet type flat shoes for about £10 (sometimes less). They usually fall apart after maybe 3 to 6 months depending how much I wear them. Recently I decided to buy a pair of decent shoes that would last longer / be better for my feet etc. so I bought some flat shoes from Clark's for £35.

Last week I noticed that the sole had worn down on the outside edges of both shoes and the leather had started to wear into a hole - worse on one than the other. There was a bit of material from inside the sole sticking out the worst one and I don't think they could be fixed because of the hole in the leather.

I bought the shoes on 21st October so I've had them 6 - 7 weeks. I thought I was buying shoes that would last which is why I feel fed up.

I have worn the shoes about 3 or 4 days a week and living in London means that I do end up walking to the station and then up and down tube escalators but none of these are massive distances really.

Should I accept that I will wear out a lot of shoes by living in London or do you think I should phone / write to Clark's?

Thanks very much for any advice.

I would expect Clark's shoes to wear better than that so I'd take them back to the shop and see what they say.

  • Yes take them back to the shop and if you get no satisfaction there then write to Clarks.
I wear Clarks shoes all the time (their sizing suits my feet and I struggle to find shoes to fit otherwise) and even my "everyday" shoes that I wear a lot last a couple of years.

My clarks shoes have been going for 5 years now. I have 2 pairs, I work full time and I'm a nurse- so lots of walking.
    I would take them back.

My Ecco shoes lasted 2 and a half years before I had to throw them out. They were worn most days. I'm very hard on shoes normally, and nothing lasted me like those.

If I were you i'd see more about it. It wasn't like it was a pair of fashion shoes. You expect Clarks to last longer.

Take them back! They should last much longer than that.

Phone the head office before you take them back.. have a moan at them and say how disappointed you are in the quality etc.. they usually tell you to take them back to the shop and then when you do you can say 'so'&'so' at head office said to bring these in etc.. Works a lot better than just turning up on spec IME.

I had 3 of my girls incorrectly measured and fitted for shoes in September and got a full refund on all 3 pairs this way.. even though we had lost the little dolly out of one pair... we had had the shoes 3 weeks as we bought them for going back to school but they weren't worn and the doll was well played with from day one.

Definately take them back. I've had a pair of Clarks black 'perfect pumps' since June and I wear them all day every day. They are as comfy as slippers and have hardly worn at all. Yours should last way longer.

I think I'm in a minority here - I buy the clarks/ecco shoes because they fit better, but I do tend to find that after a couple of months if I wear them a lot the heels wear down really quickly. (and usually can't be reheeled because of what they are made of). I do a fair amount of walking, and have decided to stick to clarks, but to only buy them in the sales. I dont think any of the more expensive ones last long enough to make them worth paying full price - not on my budget anyway.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • For shoes that last (and are comfy enough to do alot of walking!) I would go for M&S comfort fit or Fly Flot - they last a long long time.

Would defo take Clarks back ASAP - shorter time you keep them the stronger case you have. Not fit for the purpose they were sold and all that.
