can I put a freezer in my shed?

Options
HI. Thinking of doing some work here, particularly in the kitchen, which is pretty much how it was 40 yrs ago!. so just wondering, if I get rid of the fridge/freezer in there, and just have a fridge, using the space gained for a little shelving rack for pots n pans, can  I have a chest freezer or maybe a upright one in the shed? shed is single brick, 8x10 so got plenty of room. the brickwork does have damp course, but there is no membrane on the floor,(solid concrete). the shed itself has no leaks, and also no heating, so it does get cold in the winter.
any suggestions welcome. ta.

Check the specs. Many modern freezers require a minimum ambient temperature that may mean it will stop working if it gets too cold.

A shed is classed as an outbuilding. Very few (if any) domestic appliances are rated for use in outbuildings (and that includes garages). That said, short term, a decent fridge of freezer will work OK in a shed. Just don't keep it out there for years on end.

My parents have always had a second fridge in the garage (unheated and not connected to the house). It’s an ancient thing, but still working!

no idea if it’s against spec or anything, it’s always been there!
  • Go for it. The worst that can realistically happen is the freezer stops working, either due to the ambient temperature problem, or getting wet or something.

I'd suggest picking up a second hand one, and seeing how it goes - it doesn't need to be pretty in a shed.

We have 2 BEKO frost free freezers in our garage and they work fine.

Outdoor Freezer | Garage Freezer | Beko

  • If you are buying new, they often say whether they can be used in outbuildings or not. As above, look for someone giving one away or selling cheap and see how it goes. My FIL has had a big chest freezer in his garage for 20 years and never had an issue. Also very handy for when he has his bar-b-q's for putting beer in.

I used a Beko freezer in an unheated, W-facing lean-to conservatory which had a temperature range of -5 to 40C! It coped very well and is now in an unheated garage.

Some freezers are suitable for use in outbuildings, particularly chest freezers.  On AO.com you can filter specifically for freezers that can be used in outbuildings.

I have a hayer freezer in the garage (connected) I think the freezer was rated down to -15. I have only had it a year and last winter was fairly mild - didn't get much under 0 in the garage - but so far so good. If you are confident the shed is watertight then go for it. Though you may want some freezer option in the kitchen as you may not want to be going outside in all weathers to get things you use quite frequently.
