Passport renewal name change?

For a passport renewal after a name change by deed poll I understand that you have to apply for a new one in the new name & also send the documents proving this. Can this be done through the online service or would it have to be a postal application?

You make your application online then send your passport, your change of name deed and evidence that you use your new name eg driving licence,  to the address given at the end of the application process

Might sound a bit of a silly question but I make the application in the new name right? Or is there a section in the process where I add that?

When you follow the online passport renewal process you're asked for details of your current passport, its number, date of issue, name; then there's a stage where you are asked if your name is still the same now or different. You select the option that your name has changed, then follow the procedure indicated.

Yes you complete the application in the name you are using now - there will be a space for you previous name

Your answer differs to mine, Smudge. When I applied online to renew my UK passport yesterday morning the sequence was as I described above, I was asked for the name shown in my current (old) passport, without opportunity to apply in a new name that I might now use, as you suggest.
The initial question was whether I live in the UK or elsewhere - I selected the latter. Would this affect the subsequent process of requesting my details? If so, my advice to the OP was mistaken.
Regardless, the application process is foolproof, OP just answer the questions as they arise, continue...

I believe it asks for your old passport number and expiry date; new passport details -which would be the name that you are currently using - in the OPs case the new name - it then asks if you used this name in your old passport.  It also asks if you have ever been known by any other names with the option to add other previous names.
You’re right, it is foolproof and not so intimidating as the paper form (which I find really simple but I,m looking at forms all day so it’s easy for me)
  • You can easily do it online. I changed mine using the guidance from the deed poll office here www.changemyname.org.uk/faqs
