USB charging sockets

Can you get USB 3 wall sockets to speed up charging or is it only the device which is USB 2 or 3?

USB3.0 and late has mandated support for higher charging currents and hence possibly faster charging. The change depends on the device:
1. low power devices that use the SuperSpeed protocol get an increase fro 100mA to 150mA.
2. high power devices that use the SuperSpeed protocol get an increase from 500mA to 900mA (4.5W)
In addition there are two extra protocols that USB connections and devices can use:
3. USB Battery Charging for up to 7.5W
4. USB Power Delivery (USB PD) for up to 100W, depending on charger, device and cable. USB Power Delivery 2.0 was released as part of the USB 3.1 package. USB PD 3.0 supports programmable power supplies that can vary their output voltages because charging devices requires varying the voltage depending on the state of charge of the battery and this reduces the hardware needs at the device end. Not all USB PD 3.0 support PPS, it's an optional feature but a desirable one for new purchases.
In addition there are lots of non-USB de-facto "standards" like Qualcomm's Quick Charge and QC support is very commonly provided because it's built in to many standard PD chips. The differences are how the devices communicate the available and demanded power and what the power limits and types are.
I'm currently typing this on a tablet which is drawing up to 26W at 12V over a USB C port via the USB Power Delivery 1.0 specification. The charger is rated at 60W and the cable at 100W. Chargers may list only the PD 2.0 voltages but also support PD 1.0, like the one I'm using now and all of the others I've bought so far. A difference is no 12V in 2.0.
Wall sockets and extension cables for mains power are unlikely to support the higher specifications. Plug in power adapters which do are already readily available.
So long as the device and where required the cable support it the higher power sources do deliver faster charging, notably for the first 50-60% or so of charging.1 -
