Cloud or similar remote storage

So when people talk about cloud remote storage does that just mean like Box, OneDrive, pCloud, Google Drive, iCloud, Next Cloud etc?

Just thinking of getting all my documents stored in one place and thought it might be best to see what options there are.

A wrod of advice.. never rely on one backup.. local, off-site and cloud are the ideal.
  • I think what I meant to say was store them in an additional place.

Yes, there are several options.  Questions you will need to answer include if you are prepared to pay for a service.  Some free services offer limited storage which may be fine for documents but not enough for gigabytes of photos.

I use a combination of services.

I store more of my life admin documents than I probably should on an online service - I am sure if someone could hack access to my docs then they could cause havoc.
This particular online service is a 'sync' rather than what people may call a backup - so everything saved in a folder on my laptop gets automatically uploaded to the cloud.  Sync means if you delete from laptop = delete from cloud (after a period of grace)
I also regularly sync the data with a lesser used lap top (note this happens automatically when it connects to the internet) -  so in effect there are 3 x copies of my files.  my main source on laptop1, laptop2 and cloud.

I have an android phone so Google Photos is a real easy way for me to backup all my images automatically to the cloud. I have pretty much every photo I have ever taken going back 16+ years stored there.  I occasionally download them all from Google to an external drive.

    Hope this helps.
  • Are all your documents on a MacOS or iOS? If so, iCloud isn't a bad shout and makes it all seamless.
  • Dropbox easy to use.  I just have it set as a simple external drive where I save things to it through the website, and they stay there unless I deliberately go in and delete them.  Automated sync'ing is possible but I prefer to keep it simple
  • If you have an Amazon Prime account, they offer unlimited photo storage as part of that offer.
It'll be alright in the end. If it's not alright, it's not the end....
