Heating & hot water replacement - options & opinions

  • Hello OP, I am very much in your situation with the added caveat that my central heating pump is bust and we have no idea where in the flat it is.

I can live with using the kettle for dishes and an electric blanket instead of the upstairs radiator, I do love the baxi bermuda fire in front of the boiler but I can't help but feel its a little unsafe even when it's been serviced and we have a CO2 alarm.

I have weighed up whether to just get it converted into a condensing boiler every year since I bought the flat 10 years ago and especially since the pump packed up 2 years ago, digged up the floor to get at the pump would be halfway to putting a new system in. You can makedo if you have a portable electric heater to pop in the hall and as long as the gas fire holds out I'll be keeping the unit as long as I can!

Any good heating engineer/ plumber should be able to find the location of the pump, might be under the floor or boxed in somewhere
  • Hi - my current heat and hot water system is well overdue for replacement, we think. It was installed as part of the house build in 2000 so is over 20 yrs old. Been well maintained & serviced but whilst it's working fine currently, it does get mentioned by engineers that given the age the system, certain spare parts are not available anymore & with the age, it's probably a matter of time before there is catastrophic failure or it's no longer viable to maintain.

Given with the current spotlight on how we heat our homes ie the death of the gas boiler, has anyone got any experience/advice on changing their system & what options are out there ? I've seen Heat pumps getting press but is it too early in their adoption for the masses ? Do we just replace with a modern combi boiler & get another 20 yrs+, if we look after it ?

The house is 3 bed semi circa 2000 as I mentioned, with just my wife & I.

    Any thoughts/advice/anecdote would appreciated.
What boiler make and model do you have now some are worth keeping fuel savings may nether pay for the replacement.
I'm still looking after boilers that are older than the time I have been in the industry plus 40 years
