DOE Free Laptop for schools

He left school in July and we have now found out the laptops security runs out and the DOE have washed there hands of them ( not my words, from the school ) they now can be unlocked, now I'm a bit tech savvy and so his my son, but you need passwords to gain access to unlock. the school who give it him are of no help.
does anyone on here have a clue on what to do next. we don't want to be using a laptop which the security is not up to date.

Not sure what you mean by "unlock" the laptop. Are you able to continue to use it as you were before it was gifted to you? What is it you are trying to do exactly?
Is it a Windows machine or a Chromebook? The exact make/model might be useful here.
Are the Government's advice pages on these devices of any use? https://get-help-with-tech.education.gov.uk/devices0 -
Yes I've looked on that site which gives this advice
"Why devices need to be reset
‘Restricted’ Windows devices provided though the Get help with technology programme came with security software that was due to expire on 30 September 2021. To ensure devices remain safe for children and young people to use, we’ve extended licenses until 30 September 2022. You’re still required to reset devices and apply your own safeguarding settings as soon as possible."
But you need a password to reset, and to get that you need a account.
Its an HP 250 G7

had a read of the link.........
Could tryGet passwords
To see passwords for the devices you ordered, log in to the Get help with technology service, and select ‘View your device details’.
To find passwords for devices you own that you did not order personally, log in to the Get help with technology service, and select ‘View your device details’. In the search bar on the page, input the serial number of each device to see this information.
As that seems to just give access to the (factory)reset options the alternative may be to see if there is to reset the bios password and just reinstall windows.
will be machine specific, might need messing with a jumper or cmos battery.
