I bought a new winter hack last Saturday 18th (as posted in the Bangernomic thread). Prior to me purchasing it the seller had it on SORN. When the car was transferred into my name with the DVLA online last Saturday, the SORN should have ended and I was to either re-SORN it or tax it.
What's happening is it is still showing as SORN on the GOV site even though the car is now in my name and I've never SORNED it myself.
The V5C came back in my name through the post on Thursday, and I got a letter in the post on Friday reminding me to either Tax it or SORN it as I had not done so. I went onto the GOV site to SORN it but it says it is already on SORN (which I knew as I had already seen it on the GOV Vehicle Checker site).
The way I see it is it looks like the SORN has transferred over but I thought this did not happen on change of registered keeper. I'm wanting to keep it on SORN until October when I'll tax it to use. I don't want to be getting a fine for not SORNING it when I can't SORN it as it's already appearing on a SORN!

For the sake of a handful of days, given you're taxing it from October, I wouldn't sweat it.
Remember, you can buy tax two working days before the end of the month - so from Tuesday, you should be able to tax it online to expire at the end of Sept next year.1 -
