Mistakenly gave wrong no claims discount

My car insurance was due to renew tomorrow so l got quotes a few weeks ago then rather hurriedly purchased one of the cheaper ones (with esure) this morning. I put in my no claims discount as 15 years which l genuinely believed to be the case as l have been driving for 15 & a half years. I’ve just been sent my proof of no claims from my previous insurer which I have now cancelled and it turns out l only have 13 years. It’s too late to call esure to let them know tonight but now I’m panicking that I will get into trouble and they may cancel my insurance (I know this needs to be declared) what will they likely do does anyone know? It really was a genuine mistake and l am owning up as soon as l found out  :/

  • They will likely adjust your insurance to 13 years and maybe an extra amount will need to be paid to cover the fees/additional premium.

  • Thanks, I don’t mind paying a bit more. Will it likely be a lot more? ie. will they take advantage of my mistake and charge me lots more for the sake of 2 years? I’ve just realised why my ncd is 2 years less than expected, my car was hit whilst parked by a joyrider and written off 7 years ago, my ncd was protected but I think they took 2 years off it because it was recorded as me being at fault  :(

They'll probably charge but it's unlikely there's a difference in premium had the OP not made an error.

It won't be this. If that was your only accident and the NCD was protected then you wouldn't have lost 2 years.

Even though you've been driving 15 years, have you only had a car for 13? Or it may be because once you get past about 9 years, some companies will only recognise 9 years maximum and it's possible to 'lose' a couple of years that way.

    Massively unlikely there's a penny's difference beyond 8-9 years.
  • The claim regardless of fault is over 5 years, nobody cares 🤓 As for the ncd, most insurers max is 6/7 so 13 or 15 years ncb is highly unlikely to make a difference, it’s max ncd either way!
  • Thanks everyone for the reassurance. I called esure this morning and was very apologetic for my error and the additional cost is a massive £1.16 on my premium lol so panic over  :)
