BP either engineered or leveraged a very short term supply issue in a minuscule number of their rip-off filling stations, with the help of the rabidly anti-Brexit BBC and the wind-up merchants at the Currant Bun and the Daily Wail, into a mass panic with the aim of forcing the shysters in government to allow in thousands of underpaid East European drivers.

The recent government concession will now be used as a platform for further demands towards watering down / reversing Brexit.

The big road hauliers have done nothing in the last 5 years to prepare for Brexit because they never believed the government was serious about ending the supply of underpaid foreign labour. It seems they've won their gamble.

We managed to fill up yesterday - both fuel stations we tried had some, though the Tesco were limiting to £20 and we filled the remainder of the tank at a BP, funnily enough - to get back from our holiday, but will need to fill up again next weekend and I'm hoping things have calmed down by then. It's unusual for us to cover so many miles, so the timing of this "crisis" is impeccable. :|

Before somebody comments - no, £20 of diesel wouldn't get us the 280 miles home! I wish the car were that efficient.

The crazy situation is that theres now a cap on fuel £30 in the garages in our town, so all that's happening is £30 in asda after queuing and then topping up to full after waiting in another queue at another petrol station.

What a way to spend a Saturday night.

  • I'm dreading having to fill up - I am hoping everyone has full tanks and things have calmed down by Tuesday, as I have to work in a different location on Wednesday and don't currently have enough petrol to get there!! I don't do a high mileage as I walk to work generally. Hubby filled up on Friday (took 45 minutes) but he drives over 50 miles each way to work daily and I need a full tank in case the problem is ongoing and he needs to use my car at the end of the week to get to work. Several local petrol stations out of fuel today.
Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"

The whole panic seems very location dependent. Drove past several PFS in Lancashire today with no queues whatsoever, all fuels available.

Went to Tesco tonight for shopping, the queues were ridiculous.

Driving down the middle to get past the idiots queuing for petrol was fun, as we had a driver attempt to block our path and attempt to argue we were queue jumping for petrol. The look on his face when he was told the car I was driving (and the car behind me) are both electric was priceless.

In short, rudeness and selfishness seem to be out there with this shortage.

Why are they idiots for queuing for petrol?

Also the story about electric cars is wonderful at supporting your point... and it is very convenient this happened just like it did.

Because it's not just those who need to refuel that are doing so, or we wouldn't have this madness. It's like toilet paper last year, I had around 15 left in the pack (of 24), so didn't buy any until about September.

I should not be inconvenienced when attempting to do a food shop (which is done only every other week, so the fridge didn't have a lot in it) and forced to wait in a queue of people wanting to use a petrol station when I don't need petrol. Are you claiming it's acceptable for certain people to become abusive and block the road even further when others are safely and legally driving around their stationary vehicles which are already blocking the road in order to access a different building owned by the same company?

Because they are causing an issue when none existed before.......
  • To minimise queuing at fuelling stations, I suggest choosing a suitable local  going outside peak times or/and approximately one hour before fuel station closing times if non 24 hours.  If 24 hours, go in the wee small hours of the morning to do it (less traffic then as well).
