Direct Debit paid to Green Energy

Hi all

I don't know if this will be a problem so wanted to reach out to gain some understanding. A couple of weeks ago I started a switch to Neon Reef from Green Energy. This was before they went bust. I was told they would switch over and cancel all the accounts etc so I thought nothing of it and left the direct debit open for my final bill.

I will be honest with a lot on my mind I was stupid and didn't cancel the direct debit for Green when news broke that they collapsed.

Today they took my normal DD of £60. I am now worried this could go into the ether.

How does it work with final bills will they apply that to any final bill or should I ask the bank for it back (should that be possible).

I just don't know how it works and have tried reading up but just end up more confused and now I just feel stupid and worried.

Any help would be appreciated

You'll get it back, eventually, from whoever is appointed SoLR. Could be many months in the current turmoil. It took about 2 months to get my credit back, in similar circumstances, about a year ago, when things were relatively normal.

Make sure you keep a record of your leaving meter read, in case of disputes.
  • Ah thank you for the reassurance. Because of various things I started to get anxious it would just go into this void and be lost and it made me feel more anxious. 60 is a lot of money. Feel better now thank you 😊
  • Some people on here in similar circumstances have mentioned using the direct debit guarantee and getting it returned by the bank - not sure whether that is the best approach or not but if you are short on cashflow it might be better?
  • Just ring your bank they will recall the DD and it's back in your account immediately. My parents were in same situation with AVRO who took £170 from them on the day they bust. You are covered by DD guarantee
  • Luckily I cancelled my direct debit with green the day they went bust I feared this might happen
  • Thank you all. I'll contact them tomorrow
  • They're due to take payment in the next few days with me.  Will they still take it this out now they've gone under?
