Nationwide Debit Card Cancelled without warning

I discovered today that Nationwide cancelled my debit card without warning. They have sent a new one, and I get that it's for security reasons, but just wanted to warn people that it can happen without notice.
I had a few failed online payments today and yesterday, but I can still use the card via PayPal and in person. Unfortunately PayPal wasn't an option for one of the payments that I needed to do today, so I had to put it on the credit card instead.
It's happened before, and was equally annoying. Feels like I'm being denied access to my money when I have recurring payments that get declined. If I'd had simply any kind of notice it would have been enough time to change the payment details.
If you suddenly get payments declined but can still use your card in person this may be what happened.

Nationwide will have their reasons for why they cancelled your card, and whilst it would be nice if they told you that a new card is on its way, you'd not have been in any different situation than you found yourself in.
Perhaps raise a formal complaint about the embarrassment and inconvenience they put you through - you may find they'll pay you £25 and apologise. Or just apologise.
If you want to avoid future embarrassment and inconvenience, you could have a look at using the free version of Curve. You can set up Curve to normally pay with your debit card, but if that fails, to automatically pay with a backup card, such as your credit card. You can also use Curve's Go Back In Time feature, which allows you to move purchases from one card to another within 30 days of a purchase. There's also a little cashback from Curve for a while for new users.0 -
If they have cancelled your card you will not be able to use it full stop.phoenixfeather88 said:I discovered today that Nationwide cancelled my debit card without warning. What they may have done is blocked online payments due to a suspicious transaction, which will still allow you to use the card for point of sale.
A call to their security team to confirm if it was you or not resolved the issue. But if it was not you, then the card does have to be stopped. Or the fraudsters will carry on using the card.
I take it that your PayPal account payments come out via DD which is not linked to your card number.
This has always been the case where a attempted or debited fraud transactions take place. Good news is it did not happen just before christmas & enforces the need to always have a back up account.Life in the slow lane0
