I questioned the amount stated in writing at the time but was told by DWP it was correct as I only had 49 years of contributions !
These benighted souls appear to be in a state of utter chaos.
Did you ever obtain a State Pension Forecast before you reached SPA?
The new state pension was introduced 6/4/16.
At that time, two calculations were done for you.
Old Rules
You had at least 30 years NI. This was the maximum allowed for in the calculation.
Therefore you qualified for at least a full Basic State Pension. To this was added any Additional State Pension you may have accrued, minus a deduction for time spent in a contracted out (of ASP) pension scheme.
£119.20 + (ASP - Deduction for Contracting Out).
New Rules.
You had at least 35 years NI. This was the maximum allowed for in the calculation.
Therefore you qualified for a full NSP but from this was subtracted a Contracted Out Pension Equivalent for any time spent in a Contracted Out Scheme.
£155.65 - COPE.
Your starting amount was the higher of the two.
You have now been told that your weekly state pension for the current year is £181.63 which is in excess of a full NSP - it seems likely therefore that your starting amount in April 2016 was in excess of a full NSP (which at that point was £155.65).
If so, when your pension commenced in 2019, you should have been receiving £168.60 plus a certain amount over and above this.
In 20/21, you should have been receiving £175.20 plus a certain amount over and above.
In 21/22, you seem now to be receiving £179.60 plus a small amount over and above.
The small amount over and above is still not quite right?
For some reason ( errors made by HMRC/DWP presumably), you were underpaid SP from the time you qualified for it - this would explain the arrears.

If only Sooty and Sweep could have got their act together the whole process would have been so much easier. Thank you all for the input, most helpful. I'll just keep paying the tax demanded and slink off into my man cave.1
