Recommend a TRV (Thermostatic Radiator Valve)

Hi all,

I'll soon be replacing our shoddy single fin radiators with newer, type 21 radiators.

I'm hoping to fit TRVs on every single radiator.

Any recommendations on the best ones to get? I've heard good things about the Drayton TRV4, but wondered if there are other / better ones?

Thank in advance.

Had some Drayton TRVs "free" with radiators from Screwfix. Had a dickens of a job getting one of the tails to seal (eventually gave up and raided the spares box). I would suggest checking the taper thread on the tails and reject any that feel rough.

  • Drayton's seem over priced, although a good product i think your paying for a 'name'.

So many trv's available to purchase, some are trash some are quality items.  Some manufactures do "contract" items, worth considering.
Contract often means the valve body is a satin/nickle plated type colour, not bright blingy polished chrome. The internal working parts are the same.
Honeywell contract trvs were my favourite Now prefer Danfoss contract trv's https://www.bes.co.uk/danfoss-revolver-contract-ras-c-angled-trv-15mm-15422/?ref=gs&gclid=CjwKCAjwy7CKBhBMEiwA0Eb7atdQ0ldOBpzV0uYUiErP42CWj-RWuSUEvBUMsIBH89yXxW50mEJi8xoCV4EQAvD_BwE

Target price for a decent trv around £15  some offer discounts for buying more than one item and some do free delivery

If you buy the rads from Screwfix then the ones that come free with them. Otherwise Drayton, Honeywell, Danfoss - all decent but I've still seen the heads fail or the valve stick on any of them.

Get them with a liquid sensor rather than wax - they'll be quicker to respond to temperature change in the room.  Personally I have tado digital thermostats, and they are very responsive, with the bonus that all rooms are individual zones - doesn't come cheap though.

Remember that unless you have a bypass on the boiler you'll need one radiator that stays on, in order to allow the water to flow if there's a demand for heat - usually a bathroom radiator.  Also normally you don't fit TRVs in the same room as the thermostat.
  • Thanks ic.

I think most (if not all) of the TRVs I have looked at have a liquid sensor.

I hadn't thought of that, actually. Our thermostat is in our hallway, along with a radiator. Presumably, there's simply no use of the TRV being on that rad, as it is doing the same job as the thermostat?

If you have a TRV on the hallway radiator, and it is set low, it will shut the radiator off long before the thermostat hits the target temperature. End result is the boiler is constantly running and costing you money. For that reason, you should never fit a TRV on the radiator that particular radiator.

As FreeBear says but I've also been to situations where the CH was banging as all the TRV's had shut down including the one in the room with the thermostat. The thermostat was switching the boiler on but there was nowhere for the hot water to go!
