Making a Claim through a Home Removal Company

Hi, we recently moved house and we had some items go missing. We notified the removal firm, and they have offered to settle at about 2/3 of the value of items lost. Should we contest this? And if so how? They are settling through their insurers. Thank you.

How have you (or they) assessed the value? You've lost (presumably) second-hand items, so that's the level you should be looking at, you're not entitled to "betterment" by claiming for shiny new ones.
  • Yes the value was assessed, based on cost to replace. They've offered 2/3 of this value. Should I accept this? Does this seem fair? I have no previous experience of dealing with something like this. Thank you

You mean 2/3 of the cost to buy new items? That might be quite a good offer. It depends on what the items are, and what condition they were in.

Their liability and insurance is on an indemnity basis so if they lost your 5 year old pair of pants then their liability is the cost to buy a 5 year old pair of pants not a brand new pair. If you are looking at brand new prices then 2/3rds is fairly generous unless you have proven the items were fairly new when they were lost.
