I know nothing about AV....   when a laptop has a crap webcam (or audio) you can get an external webcam that plugs in via USB.  What's this interface called?  Is it simply "webcam+audio over USB"  ?
The next question will be can you convert HDMI to "webcam+audio over USB" and if yes, how to do it.  A virtual pint for any working solutions :-)

When we see AV we usually think Anti-Virus. I guess you're meaning Audio-Visual. :)

Not really sure what you're asking ... the interface is USB. Perhaps express what exactly it is you're trying to achieve - what the end goal is rather than try to define the method - and someone may be able to offer some advice. :)

I don't understand this bit , generally on PCs HDMI is output  only.
A camera with or without a microphone is a USB peripheral, and the O/S will hopefully classify as for e.g. a Video device. Windows often gives it a generic driver but some come with their own drivers.
Unusually you have confused me with your post  B)

  • Ok Audio Visual. I have an hdmi(actually SDI but I believe it's the same) INPUT to go into a computer and the program I'm running on the computer is zoom.  I want to use this hdmi/SDI INPUT instead of the computer's webcam+mic and instead of an external USB webcam+mic.
So I guess I need some sort of hdmi/SDI -> USB adapter.  Thanks for reading at this late time of night.

If you already have the input on the computer can't you tell it that's your video input.

or do you mean you have a HDMI/SDI output that you want to go to the computer

An output from another device is an input to the computer. ;)

If you want to connect an HDMI output (eg from a decent camera) into your PC to use for teams/zoom etc then your looking for an "HDMI video capture" device.

    eg
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=hdmi+capture&ref=nb_sb_noss_2

ETA the chances are you will then need a suitable adaptor/cable as the camera is unlikely to use a full-size HDMI socket

SDI is not the same as HMDI beyond the fact that both carry video and audio in a digital format.

You can get SDI to USB convertors but they are not cheap and there is no guarantee that the resultant signal will be usable by Zoom... it'll certainly be cheaper to buy a USB webcam than going down this path.
