Another vote for Panasonic.  We've got a four telephone setup with an answering machine.  The master unit plugs into the telephone point; the three slave units can be put anywhere in the house.  A huge bonus is that the cordless phones themselves are completely portable, bringing one into the vicinity of another's base unit doesn't cause any problems such as whistling on the line.  They have all sorts of nice features such as variety of ringers and backgrounds for the display.  They also have the ability to completely dim the display, which is useful for phones in bedrooms.  Everything else is fairly intuitive and they also work as intercoms, which is handy if you have a big house!

I've found Siemens Gigaset to be good, I've also found ligo to be a good supplier with a wide variety of models and quick delivery

Panasonic are great, although they have about 6 million different models so it can be tricky to find the right one.
