property developed - council tax

Hi, I apologise if this is in the wrong place,I couldn't work out where to put it!
We have just had out loft converted, changing our two bed one bath bugalow into a four bed two bath. What a nightmare it has been but that's another story.
My question is do I have to inform the council that the property is now four beds and therefore presumably the council tax will go up or do I wait for them to re-value in their own time?
Thanks for any advice.

No, your council tax banding stays the same whilst you are living there.
When you sell your home, however, the new owners will be visited by a Valuation Officer from the council within 6 months after they have moved in.0 -
No.
It will be rebanded if/when you sell. The new owners will then be liable for any increse in council tax.
I had a 2 bed semi, we built on the side converting it to 4 beds. When we sold the new owners probably had increased council tax. If you look at your local authority website it will direct you to a central database. On the database certain properties are highlighted to be reviewed when sold. I think it's pot luck if they ever review it.0 -
Well actually we are in the process of buying it, it belongs to my mother-in-law and we haven't completed the sale. I can't find anything on the local council website to suggest they are planning any re-banding.We don't stop playing because we grow old; We grow old because we stop playing.0

do the council not already know through the planning permission process/building regs process
Im assuming that you needed and obtained this prior to carrying out the works0 -
I suppose so, we didn't need planning permission as it came with the permitted development "alowance" but building regs is a must anyway. It's just that someone said I had to notify them but if I don't then I will just wait and see what happens. We don't stop playing because we grow old; We grow old because we stop playing.0

The Valuations Officer isn't from the Council , the Valuations Officer is from the Valuations Office Agency, part of HMRC.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0
