Artificial grass - Opinions - Do I need hardcore MOT and timber frame or just galvanised nails

Hi all,

We are after installing artificial grass for our small garden 5 x 8 meters.

I was quoted different prices ranging from 600 to 1800 for this job!!

My question is :
Do I need to have  rough sand on hardcore MOT and weed membrane abefore putting artificial grass?
It is necessary to have wooden timber frame before putting the nails?

One of the local fitters with very good reviews quoted me 750 for digging the ground and then replacing it with grano which will be levelled and compacted and then heavy duty membrane and finally grass with nails only and no timber frame. He said that there is no need for the timber frame and the nails can be replaced easily if need be/

Will that cause any problems?

Thanks

Preparation is always essential if you want something that will last. So digging out, replacing with compacted hardcore, and then sand is required. Hardcore can be MOT1 or crushed brick/concrete rubble - 75mm minimum, and you can then put slabs down if/when you tire of plastic grass. 25mm of compacted sharp sand on top will give you a nice flat area to roll the artificial grass out on.
My go-to site for paving is Paving Expert - Worth a read of that page on artificial grass (he recommends 100mm of hardcore).

    Thanks.
Can Grano layer be used without having another sub-base before it (crushed brick/concrete rubble) if the house is a new build and soil is new ..ie. using the grano as a sub-base without anything else?

Depends on the grading of the Grano. Your sub-base should consist of material ranging from ~60mm in diameter down to dust. This can be crushed building rubble (hardcore), or crushed/graded stone - The latter would include Granite.
