House move delayed - revert to OVO standard charges?

We were supposed to move house in September, but now looking more likely to be in October at some point.

As we have been in this moving process for some time, we weren't going to worry about the few days between the OVO fixed tariff ending this week and moving (as we thought we would be in the new house by now!). But now the move is delayed further and the energy prices are rising at an alarming rate I am unsure about what to do?

I understand that we cant 'port' the gas and electric with us to the new house, but it really isn't clear what the process is, or what the effects of either fixing again for a matter of weeks would be. Or indeed, how frighteningly large the final bill is likely to be if we do nothing?

If anyone can help explain it, and point me in the direction of the most sensible / cheapest way of managing this I will be very grateful!

Thank you

A lot depends on whether you will be using lots of gas and/or electricity in the next few weeks?! Our heating has not been on yet as the weather has been mild. Our electricity use over the year is fairly static month to month.

The way the market currently looks, you won't do much better than a supplier's standard variable tariff anyway. Ovo is big supplier (Wikipedia reckons the 3rd biggest?) so you'll be relatively safe from the SoLR shenanigans.

When moving house take the Gas/Elec meter readings of your present house on moving day and give to those suppliers - They need these to issue your Final Bills

On the day the new house is yours, you must give it's meter readings to the Gas/Elec suppliers who presently supply it, once they have given you an account in your name you are free to move to any other suppliers you choose.

Water - You don't have a choice of who supplies your Water, but if it, or your present house has a Water Meter the same rules apply
  • Thank you all for replying. I was getting worried and it seems it isn't quite as bad as I thought. One of the joys of selling and buying is that you have no control, so you start finding things to worry about!

We do the meter readings every couple of months anyway, so i think we are fairly up to date. Our electric use is fairly constant throughout the year, as I now work at home. We don't use much gas as it is mainly only cooking and hot water, summer or winter, as we have a really efficient log burner we use in the winter.
