I thought you could just click on a button and refuse transactions that you've received.
Then there is no risk of them refunding a second time.

If you can refund it through paypal then there should be no way that paypal would take the money again if they complained, I'm surprised customer services told you to just wait.

An update to this:The sender contacted me again by email the following day to say the money had been paid into my account by mistake and asked me to make a refund. There was enough information included in the email to suggest it was a genuine error. Regardless, I phoned PayPal and was advised to refund the money and then block the sender. The person I was speaking to made some notes on my account. No fees were charged for making the refund. About an hour later I got a thank you email from the sender. Hopefully that is the end of the matter.6
