I thought you could just click on a button and refuse transactions that you've received.

Then there is no risk of them refunding a second time.

I can't see that option, only an option to refund the money. I've googled to see where this button you mention should be but all I can find are instructions from a decade ago which mentions screens / options on a PayPal account which don't seem to be there any more (one post from 2011 said that only funds from unverified accounts have an option to refuse but even those options seem to have gone). I did find an option to block a contact through trial and error of clicking one link after another on my PayPal account but that won't return or refuse any funds from what I can see.

I suspect "refuse" was an autocorrection and they were trying to type "refund."

It shows the last time someone sent me any money through paypal.

If you can refund it through paypal then there should be no way that paypal would take the money again if they complained, I'm surprised customer services told you to just wait.

That was my understanding too, but if the advice is to wait and see if a dispute is raised then it would be prudent to do that. Hopefully the sender knows how to raise a dispute, and hopefully they realise they have the wrong email address sooner rather than later.
  • Thanks for coming back. Hope it's the end of the matter for you👍

    An update to this:
The sender contacted me again by email the following day to say the money had been paid into my account by mistake and asked me to make a refund. There was enough information included in the email to suggest it was a genuine error. Regardless, I phoned PayPal and was advised to refund the money and then block the sender. The person I was speaking to made some notes on my account. No fees were charged for making the refund. About an hour later I got a thank you email from the sender. Hopefully that is the end of the matter.
@Robbie64 i'm glad that this seems to be just a big mix-up.

may i ask how did you block the sender?

There's an option on the home screen to manage contacts. If you can't find it there, choose Send & Request at the top of the page and under Send you will see your contacts with Manage Contacts below them.
