Bank want money back

I had a few ppi refunds from barclays bank last year.  I received a letter from the bank june 2020 informing me that they had sent a cheque early in 2020 that had not been cashed, telling me that i had a deadline to cash it otherwise it would be cancelled.  I replied telling them that I was not aware of such a cheque, I had cashed those that had been sent to me.  They sent a "duplicate" which I duly paid in.  This year, over a year later, they informed me their agent had made mistake and the refund was paid in error.  During the refund process I was sent so many duplicate letters, mostof which had meaningful references on them.  It looked as though teir administration was out of control.  Please can someone advise me whether I am obliged to repay the bank.  It is for £4,210. !!!  Nota tiny amount.  Thanks.  Jo

If an error has been made, they can correct it.

Check that you're happy with the numbers, then make arrangements for payment. They'll likely be agreeable to phased repayment if needed.

unfortunately, monopoly is wrong.  Bank error in your favour does not allow you to keep the money.

If you have received it twice then you will have to repay it as you have no legal entitlement to it.    If you no longer have the money, then the bank will have to offer you repayment terms over a period.    The period you need to repay it is often the period since the mistake was made.   So, they should offer you 12 or so monthly payments.
If you are in financial hardship, they will usually allow a longer period.

  • Thanks for the replies and advice.  I was horrified to discover Barclays had taken so much money for ppi which I was completley unaware of.  During the redress process I recieved up 10 letters each day without recognisable references telling me they were very busy and would deal with my claim as soon as possible.  Just saying....  Jo

Just saying you want £4210 for the inconvenience of receiving these holding letters by any chance?
