What to do with broken gas meter when energy supplier has gone out of business

Until last week my energy was supplier People’s energy.  My gas meter stopped working last Tuesday at the time of the company going into liquidation.  When contacting the National grid they advise to contact your energy supplier.  I have raised this with citizens advice but as yet no resolution and no gas.  I understand many others are in the same position any suggestions?

    Welcome to the forum.
More information is needed.  Is it a smart meter, are you on a credit tariff or PAYG?  Do you mean the meter isn't displaying anything, or has it cut off your entire supply of gas to your appliances?  Your new supplier is British Gas as from 19 September.
  • It’s a smart meter and on a credit tariff.  The meter isn’t displaying and has cut off entire supply of gas

I'd be calling British Gas if I were you.  Alternative would be a local gas certified person but I'm not sure they would be able to help if it's the meter.

Aren't smart meters wonderful?  Perhaps People's Energy operated your smart meter's Shut Off Valve to minimise their losses?
I know it refers to a PAYG meter, but you may find you can do something similar to open the Shut Off Valve.  Alternatively, ring the British Gas emergency number and they should be able to restore the supply remotely.
It's also possible that the battery in the smart meter has failed and that the timing of this is coincidental.
