Insurance and annual mileage
Got a car recently off my parents, the insurance is in my name now, and so will the V5 asap ( if that's what it's called )
I put an honest estimate of mileage of about 8000 just to be on the safe side ( i'll probably be doing less than this as I will only be driving local )
I understand when you get the MOT (which is due soon), they record the mileage.
The miles that my parents did on the car won't affect my insurance will it ? As they will have driven a fair bit more than I will be.
So will the clock be reset or will their miles affect things ?
Thanks

The insurer are asking about the miles YOU cover during the year.
The MOT mileages are a clue as to that, but there is simply no record of the mileage covered at the start. After all, the MOT doesn't necessarily tie up with the policy dates.
They won't care if you cover 8,001 miles in the year - but 16k would be an issue.1 -
Right, thanks. So the mileage covered prior to me taking out the insurance and being the V5 owner is redundant now, and starts a fresh with the new policy ?1

Yup, correct.2

To cover all bases, you could get your parents to write an "invoice" confirming what milage the car had when ownership passed to you*, along with details of any price paid (or gift).
*Trade sales usually include this on their invoice (well they have in past cars we've bought)
Did your parents note the milage on the "sale" portion of the V5?How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 3.24% of current retirement "pot" (as at end December 2025)1 -
Thanks for the info. I'll check as soon as I get a chance.Sea_Shell said:To cover all bases, you could get your parents to write an "invoice" confirming what milage the car had when ownership passed to you*, along with details of any price paid (or gift).
