Esty Purchase Customs Charges

Options
I've looked through quite a lot of info and just want to clarify something. Am I right in thinking that if I purchase something for £100 on Etsy from either a US or EU seller, that the price shown includes all the duties? I want to make a repeat purchase from a EU seller but the price that's showing is almost the same as I paid when we were in the EU so I'm unsure if I'm right here? Another item I'm looking at from a US seller seems to imply that the postage includes all duties. Can anyone confirm?

  • Sometimes the price does not include VAT but it will be added on at checkout - if you put it in your basket you should see it clearly.

Postage from the US is very expensive; it usually starts at around £10/11 for small items but for parcel-sized can easily cost £20+.  (But again if you put it in your basket you'll see clearly whether VAT is added on top of that.)

As of 1st January 2021, Etsy collects VAT from buyers on orders that meet the following criteria:

    • The buyer is located in the UK.*
    • The goods are dispatched from outside the UK.
    • The total value of the package (excluding delivery) is less than or equal to 135 GBP.

*Etsy is not obligated to collect VAT on packages from the EU to Northern Ireland, or on packages from Northern Ireland to other parts of the UK.

For eligible items under the 135 GBP threshold, UK shoppers will see VAT-inclusive pricing when they view listings in search and browse, as well as on the listing page. The VAT amount seen before purchase is an approximate value. The final VAT amount will be calculated at checkout and will be applied to full order total, which includes item price, postage, and gift wrap charges.

  • *facepalm* I always forget the 'under £135' caveat, glad you highlighted it @y3sitsm3!
  • Thanks for the replies, I never thought to add to basket to check final price. I was worried about getting a hit for courier admin fees. For the EU item it was the same price once added but the tax showed in the breakdown but for the US one it added additional duties when added. I'll give the US one a miss as yes, the postage is way too expensive.
