Apps to identify aircraft and ships

I'm aware that there are apps which identify stars when phone pointed at them. I also thought there was something similar that identified aircraft. But I can't find that app.

I now wonder if there is such an app that identifies ships when phone pointed at them as we live on the coast.

I've just discovered that Boat watch has a facility whereby you point your camera phone at a vessel and it gives all the info. It's s paid for version for iOS only.

Another +1 for flightradar24 - I live near an airport and we use the app all the time.

Its not 'point and shoot' as you describe but if you cant find one then this app really couldn't be easier on a smartphone. spot a plane in the sky,  open the app, the map loads and all the aircraft near you are shown on a zoomed in map, click the little yellow plane icon on the screen and it tells you everything about it  - takes about 5 seconds.
