I really feel for you OP, we have just gone through similar with our recent house purchase. The 150 year old septic tank wasn't compliant with the General Binding Rules, so we have had to arrange to replace with a Small Sewage Treatment Plant.

We weren't able to go down the drainage field route, as despite having around 0.75 acre of land, when the land was tested for suitability, it was too full of clay and wouldn't drain sufficiently to install a drainage field on it. This means we had to continue discharging via the 150 year old route into a watercourse, but had to first get permission from the associated landowner whose land the pipes went under.

It all got very complex and stressful, and caused a 3 month delay to us moving. But it did eventually get sorted out, I would definitely advise you to get a handful of septic tank/small sewage treatment specialists on site to review the specifics of your setup. They can advise regarding what solutions would actually work for your location and pricing options.
