02 Phone Contract Query

Hi all,
My phone contract is with 02. For various reasons I want to leave them ASAP.
My bill is split into two, part one is the handset and part two is the monthly rolling airtime plan and I can increase/decrease that plan type each month depending on how much data I would like.
I am wondering, if I got my handset unlocked, if I could put another providers sim in the phone and get a similar only contract elsewhere or do I have to keep my airtime with them until my contract ends?
