Haven't driven in 8 years so thought i'd get a few refreshers before getting back on the road.
I have one lesson booked in this week and just wanted to know any advice from you guys on how to approach this.

Should I " pay as you go " and pay each lesson, or book in a few ?
I'd assume the pay as you go method is probably best as I may only need 4 or 5 lessons...
I also used to be a very confident driver and didn't have any accidents etc.

Pay as you go is definitely the best way. It covers you in case you don't get on with the instructor, or they suddenly become unavailable to teach. It's commendable to consider taking a few refresher lessons. I would suggest that you have one lesson on a motorway, just to get you back in the swing of driving on them.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

I assume that you've passed your test and it's only to gain confidence again. If so then pay as you go seems to make sense. If you are needing to get lessons to pass a test then a block may be better
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

My wife had much the same thing as you (she had to stop driving for a number of years because of medical reasons).  She took a short block of lessons with the AA Driving School as they had tailored options for refresher lessons exactly like she needed.  Some of the independent companies she approached did not seem to understand the need in the same way.

I had to stop driving for 9 years due to a medical condition. When i finally got my license back i bought myself car, got behind the wheel and i was perfectly fine. I didn't have any refresher lessons at all. To be honest, i didn't think there was any need to.
  • How many lessons are expecting to take? Surely an hour will cover all requirements if needed at all?

not sure to be honest. I'll have to take as many as I need to confidently drive again, the only thing daunting is roundabouts to be honest

If offered take the Passplus course.  Its 6 lessons of about an hour each covering 6 types of driving.

Night, country roads, dual carriageways, motorways, urban and consideration for different weather.
  • Plus make sure you know the car and where the various controls are, how to adjust the headlights, emergency flashers, lights and wipers.  I know of a friend who drove at night thinking the lights were on automatically when it was DRLs for example.
  • How long did you drive for? I'd try a one or two hour lesson then decide if you need more.

About one year, but I drove every day and lots of driving through the night.
Now however, I only intend on driving short distances during the day
