Old wall-ceiling paint peeling along the corners

Hi everyone. Another day and another challenge in our DIY redecoration of our new home 😐. Every room has given us a new experience…

Started to prepare bedroom walls and ceiling for new paint. Did the routine cleaning of the surface. Noticed loose and cracked paint around the corners and along the edge between walls and the ceiling where the framing effect from brush paint cutting was super obvious and seemed quite thick. I am not sure about the cause behind peeling paint. I do not see any signs of mould or moisture.

But I started taking off the loose paint. Where it came off, it came off quite easily and I am now back to the bare plaster. I have attached the pics – most sections where paint came off are small, there is one section where I have roughly 0.75m by 1 m of a wall where all paint came off. How should I go about fixing these sections and repainting? Also as you can see in one of the pics there are some cracks in the wall – how should I fill them?

My plan was – seal the edges of the paint that has remained with Zinsser PeelStop (I have like 2/3 of a one litre can). Fill the cracks with a filler – I have a tub of Polyfilla multipurpose filler. Then sand, mist coat with 10% diluted Dulux EasyCare matt (have loads of it) on the bare plaster, use more filler where imperfection are obvious. Sand and then use Polycell Crack Free Ceilings paint (have 2 L of it and worked well on another ceiling).

Does this sounds like a good plan? What is a bad bad idea in this? What can I change to make my life easier? I dont mind buying new products to do things properly but if I can use something that I have already got then that would be great.

I am a first time DIYer so don’t know a lot. Therefore suggestions from Pros or more experienced DIYers would be very very useful. My skill level is about average in terms of getting a good finish, so please please dont suggest something with which it would be hard to get good results.

  • I had exactly this situation on walls in my lounge - my decorator removed all the loose, flaky material and filled it with P0lyfiller type substance (I never saw a box) and then sanded it down - if it was still visible after a coat of emulsion she filled the area again, let it dry thoroughly and sanded it again before doing another coat of emulsion.

The wall was quote ropey tbh but the end result is great - it was quite mindful watching her fill, sand and smooth the walls.

There are some good videos on you tube by some pro's under the name of painting and decorating - google it and you'll find them. Probably a video to cover every problem you might encounter and they are UK so all products available here. I find I do have to put them on 1.5x speed. They use Zinsser BIN a lot but not sure about the peel stop.

Use Polyfilla Easy Sand as it's nice and soft to smooth off - if your filler is too hard then you end up rubbing away the plaster instead of the filler.

I'm not a pro but I wouldn't use the EasyCare on bare plaster as I suspect that what ever makes it easy care will stop it keying into the plaster like a mist coat would. I'd use a contract matt emulsion diluted 25% water.

If the cracks are in the walls then rake them out a bit with a stanley knife then brush a bit of diluted PVA in for the filler to key - I use it where ever I'm going to fill but don't get it all over the wall or the paint won't key. If the cracks are in the ceiling then watch them drill holes along the crack and use expanding foam to 'glue' the plasterboards together.

Just be careful when you come to emulsion over as the water in the fresh emulsion might cause the existing emulsion to lose it's key to the plaster and peel off and it's a right pain when that happens.

Thank you. I am now thinking of using Gyproc EasiFill to fill the cracks and level the sections where paint has peeled off from the plaster.

Gyproc EasiFill - it gets good reviews, is certainly cheaper than Easy Sand and I wish I'd been aware of it earlier!
