Sending item to a different address

Options
I've had a look at ebays help sections, but I'm a little confused. I'm looking at purchasing and sending someone a present. I thought it'd be easier to send the item to them directly. I know you can change the shipping address, but I'm not sure if this is done through eBay or PayPal?
Also, I'd like to send the item to the recipient's work place (they wouldn't be at home when Royal Mail delivers). Would this be ok -  a different persons name and a work place address?
Sorry if this is obvious, I don't use eBay that often.

  • It will be fine.  You just have to pay attention as you checkout and pay.  Just before you confirm are the details of the person buying and the address it is sent to.  That is when you opt to change to what you need.

A few additional thoughts to consider:

Are you happy for the person to know that you bought it on eBay and possibly how much you paid if an invoice or payment details are enclosed?

You may also face a potentially embarrassing situation if the item if faulty or incorrect.
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

These are good points to consider.
I and the recipient do not mind them seeing how much the item cost and they know to dispose payment details carefully.
But you are right about the item if faulty or incorrect. The item I am looking to purchase is listed as new, but sometimes, that's not always true. I once bought a DVD from an eBay seller, stating it was new, still in its cellophane wrapper. When I got it, no wrapper, case scuffed and disc scratched. This has happened just the once.
  • I have only done this once, the buyer wanted a book as a present for her father, I contacted her and asked if she wanted me not to add any invoice etc and she said she would appreciate that. So no problem, she left good feedback.
If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.

Just enter the address you want it sent to as part of the checkout on eBay. Its pretty much the same as any other online retailer for that.

I add the new name & address to PayPal. Then I select that address at checkout & add a message to seller explaining that it’s going to a friend/ mother in law etc. hence different name & address. I also state it’s in my list of approved PayPal addresses. Seems to work for me 😀

eBay checkout has changed for most sellers now due to eBay managed payments and you need to select the address in eBay not PayPal.
  • I am on managed payments for selling but still pay via PayPal on absolutely everything I buy on Ebay. So I can select any address I choose from my PayPal addresses. Have not yet encountered any seller where I cannot use PayPal & that includes abroad.
