Nationwide security alert

Following an MSE article, I tried to switch my joint account from HSBC to Nationwide - Not over impressed with HSBC and there was a £100 switch offer. Then I get a letter from Nationwide saying they cannot carry out a credit search on me as my Experian credit record has a password. The letter actually asked me to ring them and tell them my password !!!. I have confirmed through proper channels that the letter is genuine and I phoned them and remonstrated - but now we are at an impasse, I refuse to give them my password for Experian and they refuse to open my account. I have since confirmed with Experian that they do not need a password to check my credit (as has always been the case with other applications) so I do not know why Nationwide feel this is necessary. Anyone else had issues with them ?

They need to know the password that was set up to verify your identity. It's not your password for your Experian account.
Experian explain here why lenders need it.
https://www.experian.co.uk/consumer/identity/what-to-do-if-victim.htmlAdd a notice of correction password to your credit report
Add a password nobody else would know or could guess. If a fraudster applies for credit in your name, the lender should request this password before opening a credit account.

They're not obliged to give you an account, and IIRC they 're not obliged to give you a reason.1
