Bristan Mixer Tap

Hi,

We have a Bristan Ruby mixer tap which is leaking at the swivel.

The failed washer is the bottom one marked 5 on the attached picture.

Does anyone have knowledge they can share on how to stip the tap to get to it?

I've asked Bristan and they keep sending me fitting instructions for the whole tap.

Do I dismantle it from the top, cartridge out.. or via the bottom..

Any help is appreciated.

This is one of their easy fit taps. Water off, undo the two grub screws, and pull the tap off the base. The washer you want to replace should then be visible.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Do follow the fitting instructions carefully when refitting it.  People have reported these taps coming off the base, but that’s always due to incorrect fitting.

Thanks, I think the base is bellow the washer..so that when I take the base off the assembly the whole tap is removed, and the water is obscured,  but I'll have a look.. cheers

Are you sure it's the one of the washers that have failed. The most common cause for a leak like this is the cartridge itself.

As the diagram above shows it's pretty easy to dismantle: Top cap off and undo the screw, lift of the handle then unscrew the dome piece, then undo the large nut with a spanner to remove the cartridge.

Having said that, you may want to watch this>

the leak is directly under the swivel spout.. only a "seap" at the moment so not continuous, but enough to leave a small pool on the worktop if left for 24 hours.. so currently has a cloth round the base. Not sure if the cartridge failure would cause that?.

How tight are the two grub screws? Best watch the video I posted above.

Looking at the tap, the technical drawing and the spares drawing I believe that to replace the seal kit you don't need to remove the tap. Remove the cartridge as per the instructions supplied then unscrew the shroud that the cartridge fits in and the spout should then slip off. That's the only way that makes sense from the exploded parts diagram.

If you need to get a grip of the 'shroud' try turning by had using a rubber glove. If you end up using any grips or pliers then put them as low as possible to minimise the risk of crushing the shroud.
Sorry I can't think of anything profound, clever or witty to write here.
  • Never had one of those taps apart, quicker just to exchange the tap rather than buying spares. Then dismantle & reassemble  :)

Them taps do come apart, try what NSG666 mentioned above.

Although not your mixer tap, some ideas here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyYshPz6-hQ
