Bought something on Saturday. Independent shop..no warning of no refunds, no receipt (just card terminal one). Got in touch today saying I wanted to return one of the items and been told I'll only get a credit note. As this was misleading, can HSBC help?

Was it returned because you changed your mind?0

I don't beleive they are obliged to accept returns except for your statutory rights to reject.
If it's just a change of mind I'd accept it.. they could just refuse to take it back.0 -
In which case there's no automatic right of return of an instore purchase for change of mind - ever. Some companies may add this as a term of contract, but the default position is that there are no returns for change of mind. Therefore the shop can offer you a credit note, or tell you to go away.
tl;dr - you have no claimJenni x2 -
But had I known there were no refunds, I probably wouldn't have bought it, and was never warned about it. And there's no receipt with the terms and conditions0

As above, if it was an in-store purchase and their policy for a change of mind return is vouchers/credit, then that's the position and your card company won't be able to help. The shop isn't detracting from your statutory consumer rights and they haven't misled you.
If their policy allows a change of mind return and they didn't make clear you would get credit, then that's misleading by omission, but it sounds like they've not done that.0 -
