Thank you. Sadly that wouldn’t stop the ball rolling into his grass. I’ve decided to put some trellis up on that one side. Technically a fence but not very high and just half way on the one side so at least it will just bounce back into our grass.
  • Swing ball? I get your point but it is his grass. You need to play with your daughter too so maybe something where it takes the stress away.

Putting up any kind of fence contrary to the 'rules' is likely to make the situation worse - especially if you do it without speaking to the neighbour first.  It also risks being seen as a retaliatory action.

At the moment he has no real grounds of complaint against you.  You breaching the terms of the lease will really give him something to complain about.

Tea (and some home made cookies) could potentially make the whole thing go away and be forgotten about. And be a lot cheaper than trellis you'll almost certainly have to take down again.
To be honest, I can’t see why he would complain if it resolves an issue that clearly bugs him. Pretty much every other maisonette on the street has a proper fence up, this would just be a short fence.
  • He'll complain about anything and everything.

Another vote for Swingball; my son had a the football version which was great because we had a tiny garden, even though we had very tolerant neighbours.  In fact his mates with large gardens came round to play it to kick the Swingball with maximum welly.  We took him to a playing field to kick a normal ball and the nearby location of the field helped us decide on an otherwise perfect house for us 20+ years ago.

  • Make it part of the game so there is a huge points penalty if the ball goes offside! Or there are invisible crocodiles who will munch the ball ....it's a good start to teaching about rules and boundaries.

Personally I would stare him in the eye while informing him what would occur if he ever shouted at my daughter again.

I’ve learned in life that if you give some people (especially bullies) an inch they will keep taking till you have to put a stop to it.
  • What a grumpy sod. The entitlement of these people !

Personally I would try to just ignore him.

Has he complained to someone else or do you mean what he said to you and your daughter?

Without knowing the history, the set up or more about the neighbour it sounds a bit like it could just be a reactionary/overreacting comment to seeing the ball and then he has rolled the tone back when he realises he shouldn't have said it.

He may also have seen a random kid in his garden and then realised who it was when he saw you. Some people are harder at recognising who people are at first especially if overreacting.

I used to live near a park and when the ball went over one woman's garden she used to scream a reaction at us about the ball but she was actually really nice and always threw it back over.

Go round and see him, you may cause more issues without a chat. You'll know from talking to him if it was an over reaction or if he is an old g*t lol

Swingball or something similar would have the advantage that she could also play by herself.
