Skiing on a budget with a family of 4 (motorhome possible)

Hi,

I was wondering whether anyone has an advice for cheap skiing holidays for a family of 4 (4 and 6 year old kids). I've previously been skiing without kids and would love to go again, but fear it will just be too expensive.

We'd all need lessons as it's been many years since my wife and I went skiing and my kids have never been before.

We have a motorhome so I'm wondering whether driving to France or Austria and staying on a campsite may be a good option, but then perhaps lessons and passes will be more expensive than some of the cheaper European countries? Plus I assume I'll need winter tyres fitted to the motorhome...

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

  • Hi, I can't help with the campervan part of your question, but I HAVE seen them parked at ski resorts I've been to. Not sure how cold it might be though!

The most expensive part of a beginner ski holiday will be lessons and lift passes. So taking lessons in this country would help a lot, do you have a ski slope near to you? We are lucky in Norwich to have a fab ski club.

Other than that, a different angle for you to look at, Club Med. Bear with me, the holiday will seem expensive BUT... you get ski school included, all inclusive food AND bar drinks, possibly even the lift pass too (I can't quite remember). We priced it up and went to Club Med Cevinia a few years ago with a group of 16 of us. It was actually cheaper in the long run than our standard chalet holidays. We got lunch (and a LOT of wine!) on the mountain each day too with the instructors, I think I spent £20 extra all week. It could really help with the kids, a really huge buffet selection of food available at all times, snacks after skiing, kids clubs. Have a look and see if it might help.

Also, check out Facebook market place and Aldi for ski gear. I have the merino ski base from them, and it's every bit as warm as my hugely expensive Icebreaker ones.  Good luck, I hope you manage to get something sorted.
