Expired gift voucher

Hello
My son had a £50 gift voucher for a shopping center that expired in December last year.  As everyone knows we have had a global pandemic and the center was shut for a good deal of the cards life time and life has been difficult for everyone.  The company who run the card EML refuse to extend the card's life,  my son has called them and emailed them numerous times and they either ignore him or fob him off.

I know never to buy gift vouchers, I know cash is king but I really would appreciate some advice on this matter.  Thank you in advance.

There's not much advice to give, I'm afraid.  From a consumer rights perspective, assuming your son was given the voucher by someone else, any rights reside with the purchaser.  Even then, I expect the centre was open for plenty of the period between purchase and expiry so I'm sure EML haven't breached any of their obligations to the card purchaser.

If EML aren't prepared to do anything out of goodwill, he's out of options.

P.S. What's happened in the nine months since the card expired? Had he entirely forgotten about it and just found it?  If that's the case, he would have been unlikely to have spent it before expiry, anyway, even if the shops were open for the whole of 2020.

It's been particularly difficult for shopping centres. I wouldn't expect them to give away £50 they don't have to.
